Martha Nixon

Discovering the joys of an art practice in 2003, after a long public service career, Martha works in mixed media, encaustics and some printmaking.  She loves to create spontaneously, seeking interesting texture, colour and shapes often through abstraction or non-objective painting.  Inspired by nature's patterns, her garden and other artists, she has created a large body of work and is thrilled when she meets people who respond to the emotions found in her work.

Martha began exhibiting her art with the Ottawa Mixed Media Association (OMMA) a supportive group of artists.  Constantly seeking opportunities to learn, she studied with many Ottawa based artists such as Suzanne Warren Powell, Rob Hinchley, and took many wonderful courses at the Haliburton School of the Arts and sought out special workshops with visiting artists such as Brian Atyeo.

Exhibitions of Martha's work include the Art Credo show at St John the Evangelist, the Crichton Street Gallery and its successor the Electric Street Gallery.  She was a very active member of the Galerie Old Chelsea for ten years, where her paintings and her original art cards were well received.  As well, Martha has been a part of the New Edinburgh Studio Tour ( Ottawa) a popular fall weekend event since its inception in 2016.

Martha loves to be a weekly volunteer with the Day Program - Art Table at Hospice Care Ottawa, the May Court campus.  Seeing people embrace art at a very critical time of their journey through life is deeply satisfying for her.
